Who is Kamron Lawson? – Biography

Kamron Lawson is a cashier at Walmart from West Virginia, who became known after auditioning for the 21st season of American Idol.

Lawson was born and raised in Beckley, West Virginia. He grew up in the same neighborhood as legendary singer Bill Withers. Bill inspired him to become a musician and his songs were part of his first performance on stage.

He started singing when he was 13 years old and joined his school choir. After discovering he had a music talent, Kamron developed an R&B singing style with a pop of country in it.

Lawson comes from a musical family.  His parents and sisters are all singers and poets. His parents encouraged him to pursue his passion.

Lawson has participated in various local competitions such as West Virginia’s Got Talent contest in 2012. At the contest,  he won first place. He has also performed at festivals, fairs, churches, weddings, and many other venues across the state. Lawson also did some musical theater in high school.

While working as a cashier at Walmart, Kamron had a habit of singing while scanning items for customers. This habit almost got him fired once. It, however, also made him popular as many customers recorded videos of him singing and posted them online. Some of these videos went viral and caught the attention of local media outlets who interviewed him about his story.

One of these interviews was seen by Kamron’s sister who secretly filled out an audition form for American Idol on his behalf. She surprised him with the news that he had been selected for an audition in Nashville. Lawson was shocked but excited to take this opportunity to chase his big dreams.

Kamron Lawson American Idol Audition

Lawson appeared on American Idol season 21 episode 4 which aired on March 19th, 2023 on ABC network. He auditioned in front of judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie with the song “Just The Two Of Us” by Bill Withers as a tribute to his idol.

He impressed the judges with his performance and charming personality. Judge Katy Perry praised Lawson for having “a very natural gift” and told him that he had “a lot of potential”.

Luke Bryan complimented Kamron for having “a great tone” and said that he could “sing anything”.  Lionel Richie called him “a star” and said that he had “a great delivery”.  The three judges unanimously voted yes to sending Kamron to Hollywood.

Lawson shared that he wants to inspire other people from small towns like Beckley who have big dreams like him. “I want people to know that no matter where you come from or what you do or what your background is or what your story is; if you have something inside you that you want people to hear or see or feel, just go out there do it.”
