In September 2007, he was awarded the Golden Shell at the San Sebastian Film Festival. In 2016, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the San Diego Asian Film Festival. He is also the recipient of several awards including; Bodil Award, a Silver Bear, and two Golden Shells. He was nominated for a BAFTA Award, Sundance Grand Jury, Golden Lion, and César Award.
