Timothy Wilson Biography

Born in the USA, Timothy Wilson is an American social psychologist and writer who is the Sherrell J. Aston Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia.

At the university, Wilson teaches public policy at the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy. Timothy is known for his research on self-knowledge and the influence of the unconscious mind on decision-making, preferences, and behavior.

Wilson is the author of two popular books on psychology. The books are titled; Strangers to Ourselves: Discovering the Adaptive Unconscious and Redirect: The Surprising New Science of Psychological Change.

Wilson received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Hampshire College and a Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Michigan’s Department of Psychology in 1977. From 1977 to 1979, he was a faculty member at Duke University and since 1979, he has been a faculty member at the University of Virginia.

Wilson is married to his wife, Deirdre Smith. The couple has two children, Christopher and Leigh. Timothy and his wife live in Charlottesville, Virginia.

 Timothy Wilson Books

Wilson is best known for his research on the adaptive unconscious, self-knowledge, and affective forecasting. Together with Richard Nisbett, Wilson authored one of psychology’s most cited papers; “Telling more than we can know verbal reports on mental processes.”

These papers demonstrated the difficulty humans have in introspecting on their own mental processes (Psychological Review, 1977, cited 2731 times as of May 22, 2007, according to ISI Web of Knowledge).

He has published two popular press books, Strangers to Ourselves and Redirect. He has also co-authored Social Psychology, an introductory textbook on social psychology. This textbook has been translated into Italian, Polish, Chinese, German, Russian, and Serbian. Strangers to Ourselves has also been translated into Dutch and Japanese, with Chinese and German editions forthcoming.

In 2009, Timothy was named as a fellow to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Strangers to Ourselves is a book by Timothy which was published in 2002. The book focuses on how much the non-conscious mind impacts our behavior and personality.

In this particular book, Wilson talks of how in many cases, the non-conscious mind influences our behavior, more than our conscious thoughts do. He also discussed how two minds will often conflict with one another, which can make it difficult to keep our desires and our actions in alignment.

Redirect was published in 2013. It is a psychology book that shows how changing the stories we tell about ourselves, can help solve our problems. It offers practical advice that has been proven to give real results.
