Gwen hosted the program’s first class in a mall in Memphis, Tennessee. She later started hosting the program Bellevue Baptist Church in the 1990s. The program was introduced to about 600 churches in 35 U.S States and by 1995 it was in more than 1,000 churches in Britain and Canada. Its headquarters was in Franklin, Tennessee.
In 199, Gwen founded her church the Remnant Fellowship Church located in Franklin, Tennessee. She has appeared on multiple tv shows including; BBC, 20/20, A Current Affair, The View, The Today Show, CNN’s Larry King Live, and Dateline. She became the producer of a live Internet show, titled You Can Overcome.

On May 29, 2021, Gwen together with her husband Joe Lara, her son-in-law Brandon Hannah and other six church leaders boarded her 1982 Cessna Citation 501 private jet heading to a Women Fighting For America event in Stuart, Florida. However, the private jet crashed into Percy Priest Lake near Smyrna, Tennessee, shortly after takeoff. None of the passengers survived.
