Eileen Franklin Case
In 1989, Eileen claimed that she had recovered repressed memories from her childhood. These memories were of her father raping and killing her childhood best friend Susan Nason. This was 20 years earlier in 1969. She claimed that her memories came back after she looked at her daughter who was the same age as Susan Nason at the time of her death.
This resulted in her father facing a murder trial and Eileen testifying against him. This was the first murder trial in San Mateo County relying on recovered memories as evidence with a conviction. In 1990, after the trial, George was convicted of the murder of Susan Nason. He was sentenced to life in prison.
Eileen added that in her recovered memories, she recalled being in her father’s van when he picked up Susan. She said that she saw George sexually assaulting Susan and later crushing her skull with a rock. In his defense, George stated that Eileen could have created her memories from Susan’s murder details.
In 1992, the tv movie Fatal Memories was released after Eileen co-wrote an autobiographical book of which she sold her rights to her story for the movie. Shelley Long portrayed Eileen in the movie. Eileen gained a lot of media attention appearing on various TV shows including; “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “Larry King Live,” “Leeza,” “Donohue,” and “TODAY”.
After accusing her family of cooperating with her enemies, Eileen’s mother who had earlier testified against her husband at his trial changed her story and said that she didn’t believe her daughter. George’s conviction was thrown out in 1995 after it was ruled that several errors by the trial judge violated him and his constitutional right to get a fair trial.
In 1996, the charges against George Franklin were dropped after Janice came out publicly to confirm that Eileen’s memories were recovered via hypnosis. George was released from prison after this.
