Sturgis was born and raised in Thorne Bay, Alaska. He comes from a family of fishermen and loggers who have lived in Southeast Alaska for generations. He grew up learning how to hunt, fish, trap, and fly from his father and grandfather. He also learned how to smoke salmon from his mother and grandmother.
